“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel"
Birth and New Life
We decorate, we buy, we eat, we gather, we share, we gift- all in the name of a baby born thousands of miles away thousands of years ago…In the time of “what have you done for me lately?", I am amazed that all of this activity happens because of an event 2000 years ago…it just doesn’t add up. What is it about this solitary baby born in the most unassuming circumstances in an even more unassuming village that still causes the world to adjust is entire schedule around his birthday?
The only explanation that makes sense is the one given in the bible. There was nothing common, ordinary or normal about this birth. Well, the actual birth was very normal…except of a host of angels bursting forth in song and new star shining its light directly on the child. Why did the heavily host break into song at this birth?---mostly because they could do nothing else. The scripture says all of creation is caught up in the birth pangs and the angels had the perspective that allowed them to grasp the monumental impact that this baby was going to make in the eternal course of human existence. The baby adopted his own father into Abrahamic covenant and wrote himself into the History of the salvation of the world that God had begun before the beginning of time. Although frequently claimed, this baby’s mother remains the only mother to ever rightly claim a virgin birth…all of this would make this baby exceedingly special but what made him truly unique was his biological father-God himself. He was born fully God and fully man. He was and is God WITH us! Being born without sin Jesus continued throughout his life without sin and as both God and man was able to be the perfect unblemished sacrifice and launch the new covenant from which our salvation comes!
So when the world celebrates Christmas-as warped and twisted as the celebration has become-there is opportunity in the midst of that celebration to proclaim the truth. May we never grow weary of celebrating the Truth!
